Tummy Tuck (Abdominoplasty)

The abdominoplasty procedure, also known as a 'tummy tuck', is used to improve the appearance of the abdomen, where there is excessive skin, or muscle bulging, or as is commonly found, a combination of both these problems.

Loose skin can be found after weight loss, pregnancy, or can be the result of stretch marks and individual tendencies. Sometimes liposuction procedures can leave excessive skin, if the patient's skin does not tighten and retract afterwards.

Procedure

Muscle bulging, which can affect both the upper and lower abdomen, can be the result of muscle weakness, muscle stretching, e.g. caused by pregnancy, or by separation of the two sides of the muscle in the mid-line.

The objective of the abdominoplasty procedure is to remove any excessive skin and fat, and to tighten any muscle bulges. The surgery can produce results where diet, exercise and liposuction have failed or are not appropriate. Where the problems are mainly below the umbilicus (belly button), the surgery can be less involved, and is often called a 'mini-tuck'.

At Australian Skin Clinics, we use the most up-to-date methods and techniques. Abdominoplasty usually requires a full anaesthetic. An incision is made across the lower abdomen, just above the pubic region. The length of the incision depends on the amount of skin to be removed.

The skin and tissues are then separated from the muscle layer, and the excess skin is then removed. With a full procedure, the umbilicus is released from the skin, and brought out again in the right position, in the final stage of the procedure. Where necessary, the muscles are tightened with special sutures that usually remain in position, to provide long-term control. Sometimes, a temporary tube may be used to drain fluids. The operation takes from two to four hours.

Recovery:

Sutures and skin tapes are typically removed seven to ten days after surgery. Discomfort is usually mild-moderate for no more than a week, and is reduced by use of a binder. Analgesics, antibiotics, and other medications will be provided to you in your 'care pack', together with detailed instructions. Some mild bruising and swelling (oedema) may persist for several weeks. There is often a long-term reduction in sensation above the suture line. The skin scars heal well in nearly all patients within a few weeks. Symmetry is rarely exact, even in young people, and some variation is regarded as acceptable.

Patients can expect to return to work within 10-14 days after the procedure. Fortunately, significant complications after this type of surgery are infrequent. Unexpected outcomes such as haematomas, prolonged swelling or numbness, muscle weakness, infection etc can be associated with any surgical procedure. The risk of these events is less than 1%.
