There are many different types of breast implants are available. These can be filled with silicone gel or saline can be round or tear shaped, smooth or coated. The most suitable type of breast implant will vary from patient to patient, depending on factors such as breast shape, your physical size, the amount of loose skin and the “look” that you desire. In general round implants give more upper fullness, and stronger cleavage, whilst tear shaped implants create more natural breast fullness.

Breast Augmentation

Dr Simon Rosenbaum performs breast augmentation procedures at our day surgery centre, using an anaesthetist and local and general anaesthetic. The procedure usually takes approximately 90 minutes. Implants which have been previously selected during consultation are placed behind the breast tissue, in a specially created pocket. This is done through small openings most commonly under the breast where any scarring is often hidden by the natural crease beneath the breast. The implant is securely positioned in the pocket, and the skin opening is then closed with invisible sutures. After the procedure, there will be mild discomfort and temporary mild swelling. A supportive bra will need to be used for the first few weeks. Most patients need only a few days off work, and can return to normal physical activity within several weeks.

Following your breast augmentation, you will enjoy a new pleasing shape, firmness and the volume you desire. Much scientific research over the past few years has confirmed that silicone implants do not cause disease or cancer, however local irritation can develop if there is leakage. But please note that the latest cohesive gel implants cannot leak. Breast implants do not last forever and after about 10-15 years replacement may be needed.

Which Is Better Silicone or Saline Breast Implants?

Silicone has been used for breast implants since 1962, but in the 1990′s a saline implant became popular in the US as a result of a health scare. Since then one of the largest research studies in medical history took place to examine the use of silicone implants and found that they were safe. The result is that we now have a variety of implants to choose from.

Saline implants are suited to a narrower range of women, but have the advantage that the saline is put into the implant after the implant is in the body. This means that the incision can be smaller than for a silicone implant. They do however see slightly more cosmetic problems than are seen with the silicone implant.

Silicone implants are now in their 5th generation and now use a semi-solid gel. Studies have shown significant improvements in safety and efficacy over older implants with very low rate of capsular contractor (an abnormal response of the immune system to a foreign body) and rupture and a very high satisfaction rating amongst patients.

These days most implants come with a lifetime guarantee although this only covers the actual implant, not the costs of a repeat surgery should this be necessary.

How do I get implant surgery?

  1. Call 07 5509 0010 to arrange a consultation.
  2. Consultation – At your breast implant consultation Dr Rosenbaum will discuss the procedure with you, answer any questions you have and determine your suitability for surgery. You will be shown implants that are most suitable for you and are most likely to give you your desired result. You may also wish to bring in or wear a non wired bra, so you can try the implants for size. Dr Rosenbaum will then advise you on his proposed plan for surgery.
  3. Quote – A written quote is provided.
  4. Surgery Date – Once you are ready to proceed, a date is arranged for surgery and you will be required to pay a 25% deposit
  5. Pre-Op Appointment – You will have a pre-operative appointment with a specialist nurse to discuss preparation for surgery, post-operative care, and medications. At this stage you will also be measured for a supportive garment (bra) and asked more questions. The nurse will take you through the consent and surgery admission forms, which must be signed.
  6. The procedure – The operation usually takes approximately 1.5 hours. Afterwards you will need to rest for a while at the day hospital, before being released home. There is considerable research that shows that patients recover faster and more comfortably in their own surrounds, so no overnight stay is recommended.
  7. Post-operative – We normally see our patients the day after surgery to change dressings and again on day 5 or 6. We generally use dissolvable sutures, but these may also be removed at this appointment.
  8. Six Week Check – Your final post-operative check takes place at 6 weeks, but if you have any concerns you can contact the clinic or Dr Rosenbaum at any time.

What about complications and risks of breast implant surgery?

Breast augmentation is of course a surgical procedure, and although uncommon, there may be complications such as bleeding, bruising, swelling and infection. These events may be minor, or may require further specific treatment. Every possible care and precaution is taken to help prevent or minimise these events.

Risks include:

  • Bruising and swelling
  • Scarring
  • Capsular Contraction
  • Alteration in nipple sensation
  • Visible implant edges
  • Visible tissue rippling

I’ve heard about Capsular Contraction in breast surgery – what is this?

Capsular contraction is caused by the breast implant reacting with the body, causing with a hardening of the surrounding tissues. This can be mild, and not of any concern, or can be significant, requiring tissue release. This happens in about 2-5% of cases, and may necessitate removal of the implant, and /or corrective surgery.

Will there be scarring?

The entry sites usually heal very well, with a thin scar. Occasionally, scars may be more visible or keloid in nature and these may require further treatment.

Will my nipples feel different?

Nipple sensation can be altered in about 5% of cases.

What are the risks of rippling and visible edges?

Implant edges can sometimes be seen, and slight tissue rippling can occur. This is more likely if the implant is too large for the breast tissue

Can I see patient testimonials?

Having breast implants is a medical procedure and is bound by the same code of ethics that governs all doctors and surgeons. The medical board regulations prohibit the use of patient testimonials in doctors advertising materials. We take these codes of practice and your privacy very seriously. We can however show you hundreds of before and after photographs (as distinct from written testimonials) of clients, who have given their express permission for us to display them. There are a few available on this website again where are clients have allowed us to use them.
