 Breast Augmentation

Body image is an important part of feeling good, desirable, effective and normal.  Most women compare themselves to a cultural idea of beauty, and enhancing the breasts can greatly improve self-esteem.  Breast augmentation is on of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures, and it can dramatically improve the appearance of a woman’s breasts.  The enhancement is most often used to enlarge small breasts, or breasts that have decreased in size after breastfeeding or pregnancy.

Breast augmentation procedures are performed at our day surgery centre, using an anaesthetist and combined general and local anaesthetic.

After the procedure, there will be mild discomfort and temporary mild swelling.  A supportive bra will need to be used for the first few weeks.  Most patients need only a few days off work, and can return to normal physical activity within several weeks.

Many different types of implants are available.  These can be filled with saline or silicone gel, can be round or shaped and can be smooth or coated.  The most suitable type will vary from patient to patient, depending on factors such as breast shape, amount of loose skin, etc.  Round implants give more upper fullness, and stronger cleavage, whilst shaped implants create a more natural breast fullness.

Following your breast augmentation, you will enjoy a new more pleasing shape, with breasts that are firm, and in better proportion to your shape.

Much scientific research over the past few years has confirmed that silicon implants do not cause disease or cancer, however local irritation can develop if there is leakage.  But please note that the latest cohesive gel implants cannot leak.  Implants do not last forever, and after about 10-15 years replacement may be needed.

Important Facts:
Breast augmentation is of course a surgical procedure, and although uncommon, there may be complications such as bleeding, bruising, swelling and infection.  These events may be minor, or may require further specific treatment.  Every possible care and precaution is taken to help prevent or minimize these events.  In the unlikely even that you may need special aftercare in the immediate post-operative phase, please note our policy that there will be no added fees for you to pay.

Breast implants may react with the body, with a hardening of the surrounding tissues.  This can be mild, and not of any concern, or can be significant, requiring tissue release.  This happens in about 2-5% of cases, and may necessitate removal of the implant, and /or corrective surgery.  The entry sites usually heal very well, with a thin scar.  Occasionally, scars may be more visible or keloid in nature, and these may require further treatment.  Swelling of the breast will take about 4-6 weeks to resolve.  Nipple sensation can be altered in about 5% of cases.  Implant edges can sometimes be seen, and slight tissue rippling can occur.
